Owlgebra ("we", "us", "our") is a math-learning service for learners and families, including children. We take privacy seriously, especially the privacy of children. This policy explains what information Owlgebra collects, how it is used and disclosed, how long it is kept, and the choices available to learners and parents. Privacy rights depend on the laws that apply, including the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), the EU or UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), and other applicable laws.
The Short Version
Depending on the features used, we collect:
Photo metadata protection: Before Owlgebra uploads a problem photo or support screenshot selected through our image tools, the app creates a new image file from the visible pixels on the user's device and uploads that processed copy instead of the original source file. This process is designed to discard embedded source metadata such as precise GPS coordinates, camera or device model, original capture time, original filename, embedded thumbnails, and EXIF, IPTC, or XMP fields. If Owlgebra cannot create the sanitized copy safely, the upload is blocked rather than falling back to the original image.
Metadata removal does not remove personal information that is visibly part of the image itself. Names, faces, school names, addresses, handwritten notes, or other details visible in the pixels can still be processed if they are included in the selected area. Users should crop to the math they need and avoid including unnecessary personal or sensitive information in photos and screenshots.
COPPA data categories for children under 13: Depending on the features used, these categories include persistent identifiers (such as user, learner, session, request, and device or push identifiers), first name or nickname, grade level, household linkage, math problem and tutoring content (including visible image pixels and voice transcripts), answers and progress, activity and timing telemetry, streak and reward data, and parent contact and consent information. We do not ask a child for an exact date of birth, home address, phone number, or precise geolocation. Our infrastructure and payment providers may process an IP address or coarse location/security signal as needed to deliver and protect their services.
The former Check My Work / Mistake Coach area no longer accepts new submissions. Previously saved coaching sessions and eligible learning evidence may remain in account history under the retention, access, export, and deletion rules below. Retiring that feature does not automatically delete those records. Math Pad remains available inside supported Solve, quiz, practice, and guided-study activities; written steps and feedback remain associated with the selected learner and the activity where they were submitted.
We do not sell or rent personal information, use student data for behavioral advertising, or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. Educational analysis and personalization described above are used to provide the tutoring service, not to market to the learner.
Pip's learner memory: Educational summaries are built with programmed rules and kept specific to a learner profile, rather than generated as AI personality or learning-disability profiles. Summaries may be refreshed after activity or by scheduled maintenance. A compact relevant summary may be included in an AI tutoring request; tutoring can continue without that personalization when evidence is insufficient or memory cannot be safely retrieved for the selected learner.
Where required, our legal bases include providing the requested service, consent (including parental consent and optional integrations or notifications), legitimate interests in security and service improvement, and compliance with payment, tax, safety, and other legal obligations.
We do not sell or rent student data or disclose it to third parties for their own marketing. We disclose only the information reasonably needed to operate the requested feature, administer the account, protect the service, or comply with law. Current provider categories and recipients include:
Authorized administration and review: Owlgebra's authorized administrators may access relevant account, learning, support, and diagnostic records to help with a reported issue, protect the service, or review tutoring quality. This is separate from the household visibility described below.
Household visibility: A household manager can view and manage linked learner profile details, problem and quiz history, Ask Pip questions, flashcard topics, strengths and struggles, learning activity, progress reports, study settings, Goal Rewards, plan usage, and family notifications. Linked learners can use their own learning profile but do not receive access to a sibling's private profile or to household billing controls. Independent student accounts remain separate from a parent household unless the user chooses or is required to create a household link.
Google Sign-In data handling: When a user chooses Google Sign-In, Owlgebra uses information provided through Google and Base44 authentication, including the account email, to authenticate the user and create or identify the Owlgebra account. Google Sign-In and Owlgebra's optional Calendar integration use separate authorization flows.
How we use Google Sign-In data: The email address is used to create and identify the Owlgebra account, send essential account and consent communications, and—if the user initiates checkout— prefill and associate the Stripe transaction. It is available to the account holder, an authorized household manager where applicable, and the service providers described in this policy as needed to operate the account. We do not use Google Sign-In data for behavioral advertising.
Google's role: Google Sign-In is governed by Google's Privacy Policyand Terms of Service. Owlgebra's use of information received from Google is limited to the purposes described in this policy. Users can revoke Owlgebra's access to their Google account at any time through their Google Account permissionspage. Revoking access does not automatically delete the Owlgebra account; use the in-app data deletion tools described in this policy to remove your Owlgebra data.
Deterministic math, AI, and image reading: Supported problems use programmed math rules. Other tutoring, image-reading, coaching, quiz-generation, and checking tasks may send relevant problem text, student work, conversation context, an uploaded image, or a compact learner-memory summary through Base44 to Google, OpenAI, or Anthropic models. Selected image-reading paths also use Google Cloud Vision. A deterministic math result does not mean that a related photo or tutoring feature involved no external processing. Personal information included in submitted text or visible image content may be processed with it; please avoid unnecessary sensitive information.
Progressive loading: For supported deterministic lessons, Owlgebra can return the checked answer and core teaching steps before requesting optional practice or alternative explanations for the same authorized learner session. This changes the order in which content appears; it does not make every feature offline, remove account access checks, or mean that all related requests avoid external services. Process-local math caches hold reusable math content, not a grant of access to another learner's records.
Provider processing and retention are governed by Base44's arrangements and the providers' applicable terms. Base44 publishes its infrastructure and AI subprocessor directory. Owlgebra's dedicated AI-invocation log records model, timing, fallback, confidence, and outcome information rather than full prompts or responses. Tutoring history and support or quality-review records can separately contain submitted content and feedback.
Google Calendar: Calendar access is optional and uses a separate connection flow from Google Sign-In. If connected, Owlgebra reads upcoming events from your primary calendar, which can include events not created by Owlgebra. The app receives event identifiers, titles, start and end times, and links to display upcoming events. When you create a study event, its title, description, and scheduled times are sent to Google. Disconnecting stops new access; events already created in the calendar remain until the user removes them.
Processing location: Owlgebra data is hosted through Base44 and, unless a different region is configured, may be stored in the United States. Base44 and other providers may process information in additional countries using contractual or other safeguards required by applicable law.
Facebook and Instagram: Owlgebra maintains public pages on these Meta services. Visiting a page, interacting with an ad, or sending a social-media message is subject to that platform's own privacy practices. If you message Owlgebra there, we use the information you provide to respond. Avoid posting children's names, learning records, account details, or homework images in public comments; use in-app support or our support email for account help. Owlgebra has not installed the Meta Pixel on this website or configured it to send learner activity to Meta. This is separate from the operational analytics described above.
We may also disclose data if required by law, to enforce our terms, investigate fraud or abuse, or protect the rights, property, or safety of Owlgebra, our users, or others.
We keep account, learner-profile, household, and learning-history records while the account is active so tutoring, progress reports, purchases, and parent controls continue to work. Accounts configured for parent-managed child protections receive an inactivity warning after 60 days with no problem or quiz activity recorded for the account or its owned or linked learner profiles and are scheduled for deletion after 90 days. Other eligible accounts are scheduled for deletion after 12 months without recorded problem or quiz activity, with a warning approximately 30 days beforehand. Logging in or using a different feature alone may not reset the inactivity clock; complete a problem or quiz before the scheduled date to prevent inactivity deletion.
Operational request ledgers, caches, quality telemetry, notification subscriptions, consent records, internal support or feedback-review items, and security records are retained only while reasonably needed to deliver the service, prevent duplicate charges or requests, investigate errors or abuse, document consent, and meet legal obligations. Payment, tax, refund, chargeback, and fraud records may be kept for the period required by law or by Stripe's financial-services obligations.
Access, export, and deletion tools: Independent users can download an export of core account and learning records or request deletion of their active Owlgebra app records and login fromAccount → Data & privacy. For a complete access request, correction, or an export item not included in the self-service file, contact privacy@owlgebra.app. If a user cannot sign in, deletion instructions are available at owlgebra.app/delete-account. Parents can review or delete data for accounts they consented to through the Parent Dashboard, and household managers can remove a linked learner from Household. Parents do not receive access to an independent student's account merely because the student is age 13-17. We will complete verified requests within the time required by applicable law, subject to records that must be retained for legal, payment, security, fraud-prevention, or dispute purposes.
Backups, uploads, and review records: Deletion removes the account's active app records and access. Underlying hosted uploads, encrypted backups, and copies already placed in a restricted support or quality-review queue may remain temporarily under provider lifecycle, incident-review, backup, dispute, or legal-retention practices before they are overwritten, purged, or de-identified. We do not use retained copies for new tutoring, advertising, or unrelated purposes.

To exercise these rights, use the Parent Dashboard link provided in the parental-consent email, request access at our parent access page, or email privacy@owlgebra.app. We may ask for information reasonably necessary to verify the requester's identity and relationship to the child. A verified parent may review the categories and specific information maintained for the child, export or delete it, and revoke consent to future collection or use. Revoking required consent may deactivate or delete the child's account because the service cannot operate that account without the necessary data.
Owlgebra requires parental verification before enabling an under-13 learner's math activity and completing their learner profile. Before verification, a provisional sign-in account and consent request contain the account email, parent contact details, account identifiers, and consent status needed to handle that request. We ask for a parent's email address and send a consent request; learning access remains blocked while required consent is pending. The parent reviews the notice through a secure email link, affirms that they are the parent or legal guardian, and completes a disclosed $0.50 card verification charge processed by Stripe. The charge is automatically refunded; Owlgebra does not receive or store card details. After verification, the parent supplies the learner nickname and grade. Parents can later review, export, or delete the child's data.
We do not condition a child's participation in any activity or prize on the disclosure of more personal information than is reasonably necessary to use the app.
Depending on your location and the law's applicability, rights may arise under the EU GDPR in the European Economic Area, the UK GDPR, Switzerland's Federal Act on Data Protection, the CCPA in California, or other privacy laws. The rights below are subject to the conditions and exceptions in the applicable law; not every right applies to every request:
To exercise these rights, use the in-app tools (Account → Data & privacy), the in-app support form (Support & help → Contact support), or email privacy@owlgebra.app without signing in. We may need to verify your identity and authority over the requested records. We will respond within the deadline that applies to your request. For access requests, this is generally one calendar month under the EU or UK GDPR, or 45 calendar days for a CCPA request to know, with extensions only where permitted and with the required notice. You may also contact your applicable privacy regulator about a concern.
We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect personal information, including HTTPS transmission, authenticated access, role and household access controls, sanitized image uploads, secure handling of parent authorization, and service-provider review. Independent students can access only their own account data. Household-linked learners can access their own learning profile, while the household manager can manage linked profiles and family controls. Full card information is handled by Stripe rather than stored by Owlgebra. No online service can guarantee absolute security.
Owlgebra uses local or session storage and platform authentication cookies or tokens to keep users signed in and remember necessary preferences and temporary state. Depending on the feature, the device may retain theme and study-break preferences, active and cached learner-profile state, selected SAT/ACT track, difficulty and optional test date, a last typed problem, Math Pad or historical coaching recovery work, recently used math keys, temporary study-time counters, Kid Mode, request recovery, and short-lived parent billing authorization. This matters on shared devices; sign out and clear browser data when needed. If push notifications are enabled, the browser also supplies a push subscription. These tools also support the operational analytics described above; Owlgebra does not use them for behavioral advertising. Clearing browser data may sign the user out or remove local drafts and preferences but does not delete the Owlgebra account; use the in-app deletion tools for that.
In the event of a data breach that poses a risk to your rights and freedoms, we will notify affected users and relevant authorities without undue delay and in accordance with applicable law.
We may update this policy as the product, providers, or law changes. We will provide appropriate notice of material changes by email, direct parental notice, or in-app notice before the change takes effect when required. If a material change affects how a child under 13's information is collected, used, or disclosed, we will obtain new verifiable parental consent when the law requires it. The "Last updated" date reflects the most recent revision.
